Growth in Nenagh Fairtrade culminates in application for Fairtrade status
What is expected to be the most significant factor in the process to have Nenagh declared a Fairtrade town has taken place. Nenagh’s application for Fairtrade status has been presented by the local Fairtrade Group to Fairtrade Mark Ireland. The application was handed over at a Fairtrade information evening held during Fairtrade Fortnight. During May it is hoped that Nenagh will be Ireland’s newest Fairtrade Town joining Thurles and Cashel as Fairtrade towns in the county.
The Fairtrade Group is delighted with progress and the attainment of Fairtrade status will further help raise awareness about Fairtrade in Nenagh and the surrounding area. In order to be in a position to apply for Fairtrade status the group had to achieve targets in relation to the number of catering outlets, shops and supermarkets using Fairtrade tea and coffee and these have all been exceeded. The Fairtrade Group wishes to express its appreciation to consumers, businesses and groups for their ongoing support for Fairtrade.
14 shops and supermarkets have Fairtrade products in stock. The 8 catering outlets selling 100% Fairtrade coffee in Nenagh are Peppermill, Pepe’s, Hibernian Bar and Restaurant, Quigley’s café, Emo Service Station, Helathyme.ie café, Simply Foods and Centra’s ‘coffee to go’.
Cadbury’s Dairy Milk Chocolate Bar going Fairtrade
The big and welcome announcement during Fairtrade Fortnight was the decision of Cadbury’s to seek Fairtrade certification for their Dairy Milk Chocolate Bar and this is expected to happen by the end of the summer. This move will result in the tripling of sales of cocoa under Fairtrade terms for cocoa farmers in Ghana which will both increase Fairtrade cocoa sales for existing Fairtrade farming groups, as well as opening up new opportunities for thousands more farmers to benefit from the Fairtrade system.
